Best 100% Backup Option?

Post by plonkor »

Over the last few months, I've been collecting quite a lot of Ocean and Imagine titles on disk.

What is the best option to back these up, reliably and 100% of any disk protection.

I realise this will be a hardware option but which?

I should add that I'd like to backup to physical media and create an image that can be rewrote at a later date.

ZoomFloppy with either a parallel equipped 1541 or a 1571 with the 2mhz chipset.

Is the parallel modification really needed?

Speed isn't an issue and my soldering skills are on par with those of a snail wearing gloves :D

No soldering required with ZoomFloppy.. just uses the 1541 cable, a USB cable and a working PC... :)

The parallel cable is needed only for some specific copy-protection schemes, to make a complete backup. For most purposes, ie copying your own data discs or hacked discs, the standard serial cable will suffice.

Oh! So I can't backup my Ocean/Imagine originals without the parallel cable?

Possibly not. I'm not an expert on this sort of thing!

I thought to copy the protection a Kryoflux was needed. Does zoomfloppy replace this now?

edit:
I did some reading, looks like a Parallel enabled 1541 is needed to use nibtools:

I guess I need to order a cable then, or try and pickup a 1571, which there doesn't seem to be many outside the USA on eBay. Can't find a pre-made socketeted cable on eBay either, anyone got any suggestions?
