Hey all, do you guys have any recommendation where to get IC sockets in the US (in particular the 28 pin DIL that fits the PLA)?

For one thing, I don't recommend using machined pins sockets - they usually will not accept 24mil pins.

The best ones are called dual or double leaf sockets and I used to buy Diplomat DL for SID and PLA sockets. I can't find them anymore at Digikey.

Mouser presently sells 3M dual leaf sockets of the 4800 series. They seem the closest equivalent I can find to the defunct Diplomat DLs.
