Considering the price of components, its the same price/trouble to fit the new board with the original 2k or 32k so why not put it in there?

Other than that, I expect the new board to be exactly the same as the original from a digital/logic point of view.

I just spent a few hours looking at the shape of the chassis of the VIC-1541 and it seems the smallest board that can be set in place properly is 6x4.75 inches with one side only 2.4 inches. This makes for an L shaped PCB.

I drew a parts layout in Illustrator. Its possible to make 2 boards on a surface of 6x9.5 inches.
