Async color encoding

Post by eslapion »

About 20 years ago dear friend Gyro saw me buy a 14.31818MHz crystal at Addison Electronics and asked me why I was doing that.

I noticed long ago the color encoding on the C64 was generated by the same clock source as the dot clock and this has a detrimental impact on the image quality.

When I bought a C64DTV in 2005, I noticed it had a great quality TV signal even if it only had a composite output. I noticed then the color encoding was asynchronous relative to the dot clock. The old idea resurfaced...

Now, discussing with a friend about the 8701 clock generator, it occurred to me I could make one that uses two independent oscillators to ensure async color encoding and so I did. I love the result!

The funny thing is I now know what to do to encode the colors for PAL compatibility on an NTSC system and inversely.

Oh my! :shock:

I didn't know you had become the supreme tyrannical leader of a kingdom disguised as a communist country. which happens to have recently tested nuclear bombs and long range missiles...

You might ask that I call you Glorious Friend but is it more than likely a few prefer to call you iGnOminiOus Fiend ? (note intentional improper use of capitals as a form of disrespect...)
:lol:

@Gyro
Now we know why the uncle of the man in the photo above was supposedly eaten alive by a large pack of hungry dogs and then later declared has having been shot to death...

That's the cover story. The truth is:

That's not the only execution method.
One senior general was made to stand in front of an anti-aircraft gun, the barrels were lowered and fired horizontally...

How exactly did this thread turn from color encoding on the C64 to methods for killing corrupt military officers ?

Anyways... one can always say it's about hardware...

If I may say so... Gyro's method recovers part of what's lost, merman's method is grossly wasteful.
