Best C64 shmups? (Shoot'em Ups)

Post by Serious »

The C64 has an extremely extensive library of shumps (and I'm not including seuck games).. possibly more than any other platform.

I'm curious what everyone's favorite shoot'em ups for the C64 are?

Also, is it just me, or are Mr. Heli and Io: Into Oblivion extremely hard??

I used to play Parallax, but didn't have the instructions, so I was really just bumbling around.. I recently acquired a legit copy with a manual, so I should invest some time in that one..

I didn't realize that R-Type was on the 64, so I'll definitely have to try that one.

I recently tried Bulldog, which seems pretty good.. I need to learn what all those power-ups do, though..

I'm not particularly fond of STG's but mine are

R-Type
Blazing Lazers (Yes I'm aware it's tg16 but it's the only other STG that I enjoy)

Yep.. I've been getting into TG16 lately, and Blazing Lazers is the game I've been playing.. (A few of us are competing on it on highscore.com right now, actually..)

The TG16/PCE's reputation as the shmup platform is what got me thinking about this topic. I think the C64 probably has many more shmups than the PC Engine family, but whether or not there are as many quality shmups is the question that is on my mind.

This might be quite a large list... in no particular order (apart from the first entry which is my all-time favourite game on any platform) and off the top of my head:
Io
Katakis and Enforcer (both by Manfred "Turrican" Trenz)
Turrican and Turrican 2 (if we're including run and gun games)
Armalyte
Delta
Catalypse (its something of an Armalyte tribute act but that's not a bad thing!)
Salamander
Slayer
Revenge Of The Mutant Camels and Return Of The Mutant Camels
Warhawk
Phobia
Wizbal
Commando Arcade
Z
Uridium and Uridium Plus
Subterranea
Nemesis
Zybex
Gladiators
Zynaps
Sidewinder 2
Iridis Alpha
Space Action
Scout

... although i wouldn't necessarily recommend some of those to anyone else and there's always going to be something forgotten... =-)

This is something that's been bugging me for a while so apologies for venting; it's not called Io: Into Oblivion, the full title according to the original release is just Io and Into Oblivion is a different game that was never converted to the C64. It's tough but pretty fair with it, so spend some time learning the attack patterns - it took me about a month in the 1980s and i can still 1CC it now.

Definitely Delta and Wizball. And Delta. I also liked the scrolly-shooty levels in Turrican, they were quite awesome but then so was Turrican.

No mention of Metal Dust either, the impossibly unplayable game that I've completed several time. Lions of the Universe is much more difficult I can assure you.
