First, no, the RAMLink and Commodore's REU don't operate in the same way at all.
Exactly right - and that is precisely why the terms "100% compatible" are a little unclear to me. I guess "cycle exact" probably is a better fit.

In any case does anyone know if this project is still ongoing or not?
I just read that Jim Drew is working on an REU project. I know nothing more than that. I have E-Mailed him, but so far, no response. If I hear anything, rest assured I'll post it here.

That would be cool. He has a few projects going on right now all near to complete it seems, so I hope they get finished. uDrive was almost done, according to forum posts and then wifi modem grabbed the focus. That's the only problem with hobby projects, it's easy to get side tracked... Not trying to be critical as I have Supercards and Supercard pros and have purchased many things from him over the decades.

I moved over here due to stupid moderation on another forum (fooled you!). But here we go again! I guess it's high time to move on from here.
These guys should get together with TNT from REMOVED. They seem to have a lot in common.

Sorry for that little rant. All things considered, removing the name of "that" forum isn't all that bad, I guess. After all, they do deserve it. Humble, and sincere apology guys.

I still haven't heard anything about Jim Drew's REU project. He's as bad as Jim Brain about keeping us informed.

@motrucker. Your rant is understandable and no apology is necessary. As much as I like this forum, it is plain silly to ban mentioning other forums and then remove all links and words from past posts. I'm not going to leave over it but it is a bad decision, IMHO.

I hope someone does indeed release an REU. Especially with a battery backup.

Another idea was brought up on another forum, that of cloning the Quick Brown Box to use more modern RAM. I remember these boxes, but never used one. How good were they?, and is this really an idea worth following?

the problem with QBB is that almost nothing supports it - so unless you want to write your own software its pretty useless.

It would be more than a clone if i'm reading the specs right, for a start it'd need a bank switching scheme to use a larger RAM so, depending on how it's handled, what software is out there for the original (and as dudz points out, there's very little to begin with) would need disassembly and modification or just rewriting from scratch to utilise the new hardware as well, essentially making the device a new standard in it's own right. And from the manual i was just skimming, an upgraded version would end up being more like a battery-backed RAM version of an EasyFlash so... well, there's already Easyflash in that case?

I already own the IP for a static RAM based REU. You guys are tempting me for a kickstater.

A lot of money, energy and time needs to be invested to adapt this IP to an FPGA or CPLD, create the PCB and build this thing.

Who's in?

TMR: there already existed clones in the past, and there already existed banked versions of it too ("double quick brown box" - this is emulated by VICE even - i never bothered to add the other variants, mostly because i couldnt find _any_ software that uses it)

didnt you post elsewhere that you already made a prototype?
