I think in extra RAM you could do all sorts of storage for page-flipping and what not, but it seems to me that color RAM is hard-coded in the C64, so regardless, that'd still be a bottleneck of sorts.

There are a number of different composite/S-Video to VGA signal converters. I have one called Video Game Jockey by Startech.com ... it does the trick.

Shaun... wouldn't all the concatenation of strings eat up memory from the top down and cause a lot of garbage collection too? (Maybe not as big a problem on the VIC because with less memory garbage collection would be going all the time...)

There's no command 'else' in Commodore 64 Basic, which is part of the problem.
