The famous 1541 or 154I question

Post by Gyro Gearloose »

I find it funny how Commodore put a stylized 1 at the end of the 1541 front panel badge. But we all know it's the 1541.
But I just noticed that the 1541-II drives have both. Some are written 154I-II and some 1541-II.

Just thought this was curious.

My 1581 is written 158I on the front panel badge. I am curious to see if all 1581's are badged 158I or are some badged 1581.

There is also the 1571 which is labeled 157I...

Makes me wonder if the 1540 and 1570 have a zero or the letter o.

Weirdly the 1551 seems to have I twice, I55I.

Here's a weird front panel badge.

I think that badge is for what's called a 1541C, the cream colored variant that matched the 64C, but was a different shade than the earlier VIC-1540/1541 case. But the one I linked to is so dirty I didn't quite grasp that.

I never saw a 1541C back in the day, and indeed never had one. That's why these badges stand out as "weird" to me.

Um and the mechanism should also be cream colored on a 1541C. Clearly a bodged and hacked drive there.

I don't know why but I never noticed this at all on Commodore Drives. Interesting.

You could check out this video:

The most intriguing this is the quick glance at GEOS for the Plus 4. That's a weird one, never knew that existed. Of course it looks like it needs a 1551.

I like 8-Bit Show and Tell videos. He has a nice one on the early Commodore drives here:

He said he is going to do a Part 2 on the serial drives but he hasn't yet.
