C64 hidden gems?
C64 hidden gems?
There's some games on the C64 that are very well-known favorites, but given how extensive the library of games are for that platform, I'm curious if anyone has any favorites that they would consider "hidden gems"?
For example, I've always thought of Hard 'N' Heavy as being a classic, but a friend of mine who has deep knowledge of the C64 games library hadn't heard of it, so it appears to me that it isn't that well-known.
"Rollin" is a game that I wasn't familiar with, but after seeing some videos of it, it looks to me like it might be one of the best (unofficial) arcade conversions for the machine, ever..
If you have any favorite games that you think are very under-appreciated on the C64, please reply and share your list..

I always liked Booty by Firebird Software - so much so I wrote a version of it in BASIC using UDGs which was... slow.
One Man and his Droid although I can't remember how the blummin' blazes you play the game nowadays. Once upon a time, I used to actually be able to complete some of it.
SOS by Mastertronic was a good Isometric game - the music was a bit dull but the game was actually quite good once you worked it all out.
Spikey Harrold was another game that I liked.
Regards,
Shaun.

BASIC Programming - making the mistakes so that you don't have to.
Circles and Squares.

I really liked Rollin' too, in the absence of a proper Amidar conversion it was well done.
Pogo Joe is a fantastic Q*Bert clone too, worth trying.

"Jack Attack", an action puzzle game from Commodore that seems unjustly overshadowed by Commodore's "International Soccer" and "Wizard Of Wor".
Each frame of the game is different and fast due to a time limit. Some levels require dexterity, others intelligence, but are generally well-balanced. It's one of those games I find myself going back for a quick play now and then.

That game looks very cool, indeed.
It also looks pretty hard. Is it?

It is, helps to map the game.Serious wrote:That game looks very cool, indeed.

Draconus also influenced the brilliant Soulless released on cart, disk and tape in 2012.
Re: C64 hidden gems?
Draconus was pretty tough. Used to make me howl with frustration when I was a kid. I've been tempted to revisit it now and again, but the memories are too painful.
I suggest Dino Eggs:
A bizarre relaxing strategy/action/puzzle game.

@merman
Gah! I KNEW Soulless reminded me of another game, but just couldn't remember until you mentioned it. Thanks :) Also, you are entirely correct, Soulless is brilliant.

Cliff Hanger. Genuinely funny game, a much better Road Runner game than the arcade game!
