IEEE-488 for the VC1541 Drive - The New TriMod CBM Adapter

Post by DL2DW »

Today the boards finally arrived and I was able to finish and install the IEEE-488 adapter. Now I can switch in the VC1541 between IEEE-488 and IEC at any time, without having to change anything.

If you want to rebuild the whole thing, you can read more here: TriMod CBM Adapter

Does this essentially work like Schepers' Internal Parallel cable for the 1541? Could it also work in a 1541-II or 1571?

This adapter is not a parallel cable which can be used for SpeedDOS or DolphinDOS.

The Commodore 64 has a serial IEC interface, on which the 1541 is operated. Additionally you can accelerate the whole thing with a parallel cable.

But with my adapter you can integrate an additional interface. So you can use the 1541 with a PET or CBM (8032, 610, etc.). If you want to use IEEE-488 on the C64, you need an extra cartridge.

But since this adapter is switchable, you can also use the converted floppy on the C64. Of course not at the same time, but at the push of a button.

In a 1541-II the adapter would also work. But I don't know if it fits from the place, because it's much smaller.

In the 1571 this would not work without further ado. On the one hand this would not fit from the occupancy, and on the other hand there is no corresponding kernel.

This board essentially turns a 1541 drive into a 2031LP. The hardware difference is not very big.

Exactly, that's what I already wrote in the previous article, that most of the schematics are based on the original Commodore schematics of the 2031. Only the switch for the 1541 mode was added.
