MSD Super Disk Drive SD-2

Post by p1tom »

I found one of these (MSD Super Disk Drive) locally and drive 0 works perfect but drive 1 I get file not found immediately when I try to do a directory. I thought maybe a dirty head so I cleaned it, but no luck. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks,
Tom

First try an INITIALIZE command, to rehome the head in case it is too far forward.

OPEN 15,8,15,"I1":CLOSE 15
(to Initialize drive 1. "I0" would initialize drive 0)

The head should run all the way to the outer track and bang the stop. Then try it out. If that fails:

Can it format a disk and read its directory afterwards? That's the classic test to see if the issue is alignment, although alignment problems in non-commodore drives are relatively rare. How's the pressure pad/arm? How about the hub clamp, is the disk spinning or is it just slipping? Are the rails the head slides on clean?

MSD drives are notorious for leaking capacitors. Check yours to see if there is any leakage which has destroyed the boards.
